Winterthur Museum

About Winterthur Museum

About 1 hour 16 minutes from the Inn

Winterthur is a world-class duPont museum just over the border into Delaware and is the quintessential museum of the duPonts. The 175-room mansion feature over 90,000 antiques and works of art. It provides a fascinating look at Henry Francis duPont’s family that grew up in the house. His desire to preserve American artifacts started in the 1920s. The gardens are beautiful and natural, the mansion is as interesting as the collections. Some of our favorites are the spiral staircase (without any supports), Paul Revere’s silver tankards, and a very small room that houses the collection of American fire buckets. There’s some emphasis on German farmhouses and a room is entirely devoted to Pennsylvania German Folk Art. Look closely at the tilted window wells, the big cast iron locks and the skeleton keys and you’ll recognize part of our inn! There are lots of events throughout the year and this is a very interesting museum about ten minutes south of Longwood. The two museums make for a full, but very enjoyable day. We loved Winterthur so much that we wrote a blog about it.
